The heat equation is well posed in Bergman spaces

Time: Wednesday, May 6th at 16:15.

Place: Over Zoom and in colloquium watch events at mathematics departments (see bottom of page)

Speaker: Marius Tucsnak, University of Bordeaux

Chaired by: Lassi Paunonen, University of Tampere

Abstract: We show that the one-dimensional heat equation with boundary inputs admits a natural well-posed formulation in Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions. In the deterministic case, the minimal state space is a Bergman space on a rhombus adapted to the interval. For boundary white-noise forcing, weighted Bergman spaces yield almost sure continuity of the mild solution. The approach connects reachability, semigroup theory, complex analysis, and stochastic PDEs.

Speaker introduction: Marius Tucsnak obtained his PhD in 1992 in Orléans and his HDR in 1995 in Paris 6. After positions in Versailles and Nancy, where he became full professor in 1997 and directed the Elie Cartan Institute (2009–2015), he joined the University of Bordeaux in 2015. He has been a senior member of the IUF since 2013. His work focuses on control of PDEs and fluid-structure systems. He has co-authored a monograph with George Weiss, was an invited speaker at the 2022 ICM, and received the 2025 SIAM Reid Prize.
